Overview
WorkOS is the enterprise-readiness layer for B2B SaaS, a developer-first take on CIAM rather than an enterprise incumbent. It sells the features B2B buyers demand once a deal reaches procurement: SAML SSO, SCIM directory sync, audit logs, and an admin portal your customers' IT teams configure themselves. AuthKit added a hosted authentication front end, but the company's center of gravity is still the enterprise feature set that unblocks upmarket sales.
What it is good at
SSO and directory sync are the strongest in the category. A clean abstraction across dozens of identity providers means you integrate once instead of building a connection per customer, which is the difference between closing an enterprise deal in days versus weeks. Developer experience is excellent, with well-designed APIs for Directory Sync, the Admin Portal, and audit logs. Pricing is more transparent than most enterprise CIAM, and the free tier lets teams ship their first SSO connections before paying.
Where it falls short
This is a B2B tool, not a B2C platform. Consumer-scale features like progressive profiling and social-first onboarding are not the focus, so high-volume consumer login is the wrong fit. Authorization is basic compared with a dedicated fine-grained engine, governance and audit are adequate for SaaS rather than a substitute for full IGA, and there is no self-hosted deployment.
Pricing
User-based, with a free tier covering early SSO connections, then per-connection and per-active-user charges. More transparent than most enterprise CIAM, though large volume still moves to sales. Model your scenario with the TCO calculator.
Best for, and who should look elsewhere
Choose it if you sell B2B SaaS and need enterprise SSO and SCIM to close upmarket deals fast without building them. Look elsewhere for consumer B2C scale or deep authorization. Compare Frontegg for B2B self-service, Auth0 for B2C and B2B breadth, and the WorkOS vs Frontegg and Auth0 vs WorkOS comparisons.
Bottom line
The fastest path to enterprise SSO and SCIM for B2B SaaS, and the wrong tool for consumer B2C scale or deep authorization.
