Overview
Proofpoint Identity Threat Defense, built on the acquired Illusive technology, discovers and remediates identity vulnerabilities and attack paths and deploys deception to catch privilege escalation and lateral movement. Proofpoint (founded 2002, now owned by Thoma Bravo) is a large security vendor best known for email security, and this offering extends that reach into the identity layer where many post-compromise attacks unfold. See what ITDR is and why it matters for context on the category.
What it is good at
Attack-path discovery, privilege risk remediation, and deception are the strengths. The platform finds the cached credentials, misconfigurations, and trust relationships attackers chain together to move from a foothold to domain dominance, then helps remove them. Its deception capability plants decoys that trip up attackers attempting privilege escalation, generating high-fidelity alerts. Integration with Proofpoint's broader threat platform gives customers a single vendor across the email-to-identity attack chain.
Where it falls short
It is one part of a larger security portfolio, so depth versus a pure-play ITDR varies, and roadmap attention competes with Proofpoint's other priorities. It is not built around Active Directory backup and recovery, and organizations wanting a standalone, best-of-breed ITDR may prefer a focused specialist. Value is strongest for existing Proofpoint customers consolidating vendors.
Pricing
Enterprise subscription and quote-based, typically bundled or co-sold with the Proofpoint platform. Model it with the TCO calculator.
Best for, and who should look elsewhere
A strong fit for enterprises wanting to discover and remediate identity attack paths, and for Proofpoint customers extending into identity threat defense. Look elsewhere if AD backup and recovery is the priority or you need a standalone best-of-breed ITDR. Compare with Silverfort, Vectra AI, Tenable Identity Exposure and the CrowdStrike Falcon Identity vs Microsoft Defender for Identity writeup.
Bottom line
A strong identity-attack-path and deception capability, most compelling for enterprises already invested in the Proofpoint platform. Browse the ITDR vendor directory.
