The Thai national ID card is a mandatory smart card with an embedded IC chip, built on the 13-digit personal identification number and issued by DOPA. Required from age 7, it is the universal credential for voting, banking, land transfers, and SIM contracts, and DOPA also operates a facial-verification service used by relying parties.
Personal Identification Number (PID) format
13 digits, printed as 0-0000-00000-00-0
- •Digit 1: person category (citizenship and registration status); never 0 or 9
- •Digits 2 to 5: province and district of registration
- •Digits 6 to 12: birth-certificate or sequential registration number
- •Digit 13: check digit
Modulus 11 checksum over the first 12 digits determines the final digit.
