Overview

Firebase Authentication and the Google Identity Platform provide drop-in sign-in for web and mobile apps, with social login, phone authentication, and tight Firebase integration. With roots going back to Firebase's early years, it is one of the most widely used consumer-auth options, especially for mobile-first startups that want login working in an afternoon.

What it is good at

Speed and cost for consumer apps are the strengths. The SDKs, particularly on mobile, are excellent, the free tier is generous, and integration with the rest of Firebase (database, hosting, functions, analytics) makes it a natural choice for apps already on that stack. Social and phone sign-in are well supported, and the Identity Platform tier adds SAML/OIDC federation and multi-tenancy for teams that grow into them.

Where it falls short

Enterprise B2B depth is limited. Multi-tenancy and federation exist on the Identity Platform tier but are less rich than dedicated B2B CIAM, governance and audit are thin, and deep customization of flows is constrained. It is most compelling inside the Google and Firebase ecosystem; outside it, the pull is weaker. Teams selling upmarket to enterprises usually outgrow it.

Pricing

Generous free tier plus usage-based Identity Platform pricing for advanced features. Model the cost as you scale and add enterprise features with the TCO calculator.

Best for, and who should look elsewhere

Choose Firebase Auth for fast, low-cost consumer auth, especially on mobile or when already on Firebase. For the AWS equivalent, compare Amazon Cognito; for enterprise B2B readiness, see WorkOS and Auth0; for a polished web drop-in, see Clerk.

Bottom line

A fast, inexpensive consumer-auth choice for startups and mobile apps in the Google ecosystem, not an enterprise B2B platform.
